The infrastructure that supports research and teaching at the Center of Biotechnology on Genomics of the National Polytechnical Institute and addresses problems and develops new technologies in the area of biotechnology that impact society´s economy is located in a total area of 20,000 m2, 1800 m2 of laboratory buildings, and 800 m2 for administrative offices, classrooms and a library.
The center currently has three multipurpose rooms equipped with a cannon projector and screen, as well as wireless network communications and the ability to hold virtual conferences.
Library and facilities
The Center of Biotechnology on Genomics has a library equipped with various automatic search terminals, books related to genomic biotechnology, paper journals, and professional library services for users.
In addition, our Center has a Tandberg 2500 videoconferencing system that allows high quality video and audio links.
The Center of Biotechnology on Genomics has the necessary equipment to carry out research in the field of plant, environmental, medical and animal genomics biotechnology, such as sequencing equipment, thermal cyclers with Peltier heater versatility to use any polymerase chain reaction (PCR) including quantitative and real-time PCR vertical and horizontal electrophoresis chambers of different size including pulsed-field electrophoresis, high and low speed refrigerated centrifuges and micro centrifuges, ultra centrifuge, electroporator to transform plant and animal cells, systems for detecting biomolecules by blots, including darkroom equipment for developing photographic plates, photo documentation systems for chemiluminescence systems, separation and identification by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography and low pressure fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) with analysis by immunological techniques using the ELISA reader; for preservation of reagents and cells at low temperature we have refrigerators, freezers (−20ºC), ultra freezers (−70ºC), containers for storing and transporting materials and cells in liquid nitrogen, a freeze-drier for the preservation and concentration of materials and cells, biosafety class II hoods for cell and microorganism cultures, a fermentation area with 3 and 14 liter equipment, a micro cell propagation laboratory with environmental chambers that control relative humidity, periods of light and temperature, including greenhouse areas, a sterilization and laboratory material preparation area; to meet the needs of materials and reagents we have a warehouse of reagents and materials, an area of bioinformatics with SUN servers that generate information that complements genomic research; a propagation area and bioassays with insects; a common work area with materials, equipment and reagents for common temporary molecular biology tests.
Finally, we can conclude that there are 8 laboratories and 15 different support areas for research and teaching that allow students and researchers to use analytical tools and world class computers in the area of genomics, gene expression, and technological development.
